About the Caledonian Canal: A Historic Journey Through the Scottish Highlands
The Caledonian Canal, opened in 1822, is one of Scotland’s most impressive waterways, connecting the east of Scotland with the west coast. The canal cuts through the Scottish Highlands and winds its way through several lochs, including Loch Ness. It was originally built to avoid the dangerous journey around mainland Scotland and to promote trade. With its historic locks and breathtaking views, the canal offers not only an important connection, but also a unique way to experience the rugged beauty of Scotland’s landscape. A journey through the Caledonian Canal is a journey through time, where you can discover both the majestic nature and the rich history of this remarkable waterway.
Day-to-day programme
Day 1: Your adventure begins in Oban at 17:00! Steady is ready for departure in the marina at North Pier, just 300 metres from the train station. You will meet your fellow travellers and have plenty of time to explore the ship. After a shared dinner, you will receive a detailed introduction to the journey and the adventures ahead. We raise a glass to an incredible week full of adventure and nature!
Day 2 and 3: It’s time to hoist the sails! We leave Oban and set course for the enchanting Loch Linnhe. Over the next two days, we sail through this breathtaking loch, surrounded by green hills and picturesque bays. We spend the nights anchored in peaceful, sheltered bays, where you can fully enjoy the tranquillity and nature. There is plenty of time to further explore the ship and enjoy a pleasant walk in the surrounding landscape.
Day 4: Today we set course for the legendary Caledonian Canal, where we will see the majestic Ben Nevis rising in the distance. At the end of the day, we arrive at the impressive Neptune’s Staircase, a series of locks that lifts us no less than 19 metres. It is a spectacular sight and one of Scotland’s great engineering marvels!
Day 5: A long but spectacular sailing day lies ahead, filled with many locks and stunning views. This is the most beautiful part of the route! We are on the move all day, sailing through the heart of the Highlands, and end the day in the picturesque village of Gairlochy, a peaceful spot along the canal where we spend the night and explore the surroundings.
